It is with great pleasure that the DEM announces the next webinar on ‘The
Importance of the Curriculum at a time of change´ coordinated by Ronald M.
Harden, who is Professor of Medical Education (Emeritus) University of
Dundee and Editor of Medical Teacher. He was formerly General Secretary and
Treasurer of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE),
Teaching Dean & Director of the Centre for Medical Education at the
University of Dundee ) and Doctor Honoris Causa by our Faculty. (see short
CV

).
Ronald M. Harden is undoubtedly the right expert to approach this topic
because he has been and continues to be a pioneer in developing/introducing
new curriculum approaches. Among them, we highlight the SPICES Curriculum
(SPICES is an acronym and stands for student centered; problem-based
learning; integrated teaching; community-based; electives and systematic),
the SPIRAL Curriculum (a curriculum where there is an iterative revisiting
of topics, subjects or themes throughout the course), the Outcome Based
Education (an approach that requires a crucial change, with a curriculum
oriented to the ‘product’ (learning outcomes) rather than privileging the
'process'), the Task Based learning (where a framework for learning is the
common clinical presentations, for example a chest pain) .
He published more than 450 articles in leading journals worldwide and is
author/editor of several books among which we distinguish Essential Skills
for a Medical Teacher, The Eight Roles of the Medical Teacher, A practical
Guide for Medical teachers, The Definitive Guide to the OSCE, the Changing
Roles of Medical Students. Moreover he is currently writing a book on
Curriculum Development at the request of Elsevier, a global leader in
information and analytics, so he will update us on the last developments
while exploring the following topics:
- Why the curriculum is important
- Ten questions that should be answered in developing a curriculum
- The power of the curriculum cube
- Common problems in relation to curriculum planning
This webinar was structured with the aim of being essentially interactive
and in the context of the current FMUL Curricular Reform. This is why Prof.
Harden will respond to 7 questions posed by the Curriculum Reform
Commission as well as other questions you would like to raise.
Four very short papers are recommended by Prof. Harden as preliminary
reading. Though not required they add value to the webinar.
1. Why the curriculum is important

2. 10 questions that should be answered in developing a curriculum
<http://www.medicina.ulisboa.pt/sites/default/files/2024-01/webinar-rh-paper-2-10-questions.pdf>
3. The power of the curriculum cube

4. Curriculum options

That said, the webinar does not apply just to the first three years of the
MIM because many of the above topics can also be used to improve the
clinical cycle.
